After breaking into the national rankings this week with their hugely important win at Georgia, (South) Carolina will take it easy at home this weekend against Football-Championship-Subdivision South Carolina State. Though no game is an automatic win, this is about as close to it as they come. In SC State’s first game against a Football Bowl Division foe two weeks ago, they lost 34-3 to the unranked Air Force Academy. SC State will probably be well-represented in the stands of Williams-Brice stadium, but it’s doubtful that representation will stretch to the scoreboard. If Tyrone Nix’s defense can keep Georgia from scoring a touchdown in Athens, it’s hard to imagine they’ll be giving SC State any free passes to the painted grass. And since Corey Boyd will be pounding through SC State defenders all night, SC State’s touchdown production will be crucial. (South) Carolina also caught a break in that the Bulldogs suspended four players including their starting kicker and leading receiver for Saturday’s game. The Gamecocks will probably just use the Bulldogs as tackling dummies to warm up for next weekend’s matchup against Louisiana State.
